My Sidi Nix Winter boots, in plain Black/Black, are what see me through the cold months on the bike. They are a proper road shoe with the winter built in, rather than a summer shoe hidden under overshoes.

Two things keep them on my feet from autumn through to spring. The first is simple: they keep my feet warm. Cold toes are usually the first thing to end a winter ride, and in these they stay comfortable for hours on the Kent lanes.

The second is the reflective strip. The Velcro strap across the ankle carries bright reflective stripes, and there are more down the heel, so every pedal stroke flashes back at a driver’s headlights. On dark winter evenings that moving light at ankle height is one of the best things I can wear to be seen.

The features

  • Gore-Tex membrane: a PFC-free Gore-Tex ePE lining that keeps out wind and water while letting sweat escape.
  • PrimaLoft insulation: a thin fleecy lining that gives the warmth without the bulk.
  • Dial closure: Sidi’s Tecno dial pulls a Dyneema cable across the forefoot, so the fit can be tweaked a click at a time, even while riding.
  • Ankle strap: a Velcro strap closes the mid-height cuff and carries the reflective stripes.
  • Reflective details: stripes on the strap and down the heel for visibility in headlights.
  • Sole: Sidi’s R2CC sole in nylon, glass fibre and carbon, rated 9 on Sidi’s 12-point stiffness scale, so nothing is lost in power transfer.
  • Walking: rubber inserts on the sole for grip off the bike, and they can be replaced when worn.
  • Cleats: standard 3-bolt road fitting for Shimano SPD-SL, Look Keo and similar pedals (cleats not included).
  • Sizes and colours: EU 35 to 50, in Black/Black, White/Black and Navy Blue/Yellow.

Warm feet and a bit of extra visibility are exactly what a winter boot should give me, and the Nix does both.
